Janice Thomas Obituary

Janice Norine Thomas (nee: Ragon), age 87, of Portage Lakes passed away Wednesday, January 31, 2018 while at home surrounded by her family. She was born November 19, 1930 in Fort Wayne Indiana; the daughter of Rev. Leroy and Nora (Nall) Ragon.

Janice was a 1948 graduate of Ohio City Liberty High School, graduated from Marion College in 1953 with a BA & BS, and received her masters degree (MLS) from Kent State University in 1960. Janice married Larry C Thomas of Akron on February 14, 1959 in Massillon. She retired from Manchester Schools in 1992 as librarian and media coordinator. During her 32 years at Manchester, she served terms as president of SCSMS, MEA, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the Ohio Education Library Media Association (OELMA). In 1988, Janice was selected as Ohio education librarian of the year by OELMA. Janice also served on the Coventry Local Schools Board of Education for 12 years.

Janice was an active and devoted member of the Apostolic Church of Barberton. She served as AIB and 60+ leader for many years. Janice and Larry are charter members of the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter. She also enjoyed reading, cruising, and planning church and family trips.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Larry; son, Lyndon (Barb) of New Franklin; daughter, Lori (Joe) Hall of Coventry; three grandchildren, Richard (Sarah) Thomas, Victoria Hall, and Grace Hall; brother, John (Barb) Ragon and sister, Cynthia Gibson. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Pam Griffee.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, February 5, 2018 at 7:00 pm at the Apostolic Church of Barberton located at 1717 West Turkeyfoot Lake Rd. with the Rev. Paul Pamer officiating. Visitation will be held before the funeral from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Apostolic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross cemetery on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at 10:00 a.m.
