Charles "Sheriff" Kornas

Charles Kornas was born November 12, 1916 in Ford City, PA to Johanna (nee Barna) and Alex Kornas, passed away April 5, 2017.

Charlie came to Akron in 1925 where he lived on Winnipeg St. with brothers, John, Mike, and Andy, along with sisters, Helen, Mary, Pauline, and Mecca.

Charlie proudly served in the U.S. Army with many fellow neighbors and other Ohioans in the 37th Division, K Company.  The 37th Division unselfishly fought and died in hard combat campaigns all over the Asiatic Pacific Theater, Philippine Islands, New Georgia, and Guadalcanal.  Charlie earned many campaign medals, including the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, American Defense Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Good Conduct Ribbon, and Purple Heart.  He also was Past Commander of the VFW Post.

Charlie married Juanita Solomon, who preceded Charlie on April 4, 1991.

He is survived by son, Tom (Becky) Kornas of Norton; daughter, Shirley (Rob) Rutledge of Yuma, Arizona; five grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be Monday, April 10, 2017 at 10:00 AM at Cox-McNulty Funeral Home, 222 Norton Ave., Barberton, OH  44203.  Interment with military honors will follow at Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Cuyahoga Falls.  Family will receive friends Sunday, April 9, 2017 from 1-3 PM.
