Norman William Thurmer, 77, passed away Sunday, September 2, 2018 in Akron, Ohio. Norm leaves behind his devoted wife of 55 years, Vina Lucinda Thurmer (nee: Parsons).
He is also survived by his children: Carol Lea D'Andrea (James), Norman William (Bill) Thurmer (Stefanie), Richard Allen Thurmer (Charity), 16 grandchildren & nine great-grandchildren.
Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin August 19, 1941, Norm was preceded in death by parents, Arthur & Rita (nee: Kendall) Thurmer and three older siblings: Bud, Ruth & Juanita.
He spent three years in the U.S. Army, serving as a medic in Kansas & Germany from 1961 - 1964.
Norm worked in the local automotive industry for about 40 years & was an award winning service manager with Ford Motor Company.
He was an avid member of the Loyal Order of Moose for many years & a member of the American Legion.
Widely admired for his integrity, firm handshake & hearty smile, Norm was a calming influence, both at work & at home. He had a way of offering advice that cut to the heart of a matter with a few quiet words. With a quick wit & a sharp mind, he enjoyed gently teasing his loved ones often.
His lifelong hobbies of fishing & boating, classic westerns & good cop shows brought him much joy, but his favorite pastime was spending time with his grandchildren, great grandchildren, former canine companion, Bandit & current canine companion, Buddy.
Norman William Thurmer will be terribly missed by his family & friends.
The family will receive friends, THURSDAY, September 6, 2018 from 5:00-8:00pm at Cox- McNulty Funeral Home, 222 Norton Avenue, Barberton. Funeral Services will be held, FRIDAY at 11:00am at the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will follow at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Seville.
