Bernard "Bernie" Arnold

November 6, 2021

Obituary

Bernard (Bernie) L. Arnold, 83, of Wadsworth, died November 6, 2021 at Medina Hospital after a series of illnesses. He was born in West Richfield to Frances Arnold, Jr., and Helen (Schlayer) Arnold. Bernie graduated from Highland High School in the class of 1956 and from the University of Akron.
After high school, he worked for a short time in California as a wildfire fighter, then returned and married Patricia (Hodgman), and they spent 62 years together. He retired from Akron Public Schools as a Physical Education teacher—but always considered himself to be a farmer.
Bernie was active in the community and in several conservation organizations. He was a Boy Scout Leader of Troop 411 in Sharon Center, he started the Unicycle Club for his students at Fairlawn Elementary, and he attended Granger United Methodist Church. When he wasn't serving others, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling throughout the United States and Canada. He extensively remodeled the family home, built a house, and could fix almost anything that was broken.
He is survived by his wife, children Scott (Phyllis), Cheryl (Bob), and Eric (Natalie), 6 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers Howard, Ed, and Dale, and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Allen, and sisters Laura Jean and Marjorie.
In honor of Bernie's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sharon Township Fire Department, P.O. Box 310, Sharon Center, OH 44274, or the Food Pantry at St. Paul's Sharing Center, P.O. Box 120, Sharon Center, OH 44274.
