Donald Lee Butcher, age 90, of Barberton Ohio, died peacefully on April 14, 2023. Don was born on November 10, 1932 in Weston, West Virginia to Clete Butcher and Reva (Bailey) Butcher. He was a graduate of Fairmont State College and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. He married Mary Kathryn (Katie) Maley on August 10, 1956 at the Gee Lick Methodist Church in Weston. They moved to the Akron, Ohio area in 1959 and then to Barberton, Ohio in 1961. Don accepted a teaching position in the Norton School system where he taught 8th grade Science until his retirement in 1986. He loved the State of West Virginia, Ohio State football, gardening, building bird houses, attending his kids/grandkids sporting events, and visiting with his friends at the Barberton Moose Club #759.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ronald and Gary, and sisters Amy Dent and Martha Sue Carpenter. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Katie, his children: Donna (Winn) Sheppard, Phil (Ja’nean) Butcher, Greg (Stephanie) Butcher, six grandchildren: Alan (Caitlyn) Sheppard, Ryan (Morgan) Sheppard, Kristen Butcher, Frankie Bailey, Seth Scheibel, and Madison (Jeremy) Evans, one great-granddaughter, Hailey Sheppard, one sister-in-law, Virgie Butcher of Jefferson, Ohio, and one brother-in-law, Clifford Dent of Philippi, West Virginia.
Cremation has taken place and to celebrate his life the family will have a graveside service at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Seville, Ohio on May 22nd at 1:45pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ohio Blue Bird Society or the Barberton Moose Club #759 in his honor. Arrangements are being handled by Cox-McNulty Funeral Home.
