Elizabeth (Betty) Schaffstein, nee “Berry”, passed away on September 9, 2025. She was the beloved wife of Jerry for sixty three years and beloved mother to Diane and Lee Ann.
Betty was born in 1937 and grew up in Evansville, Indiana graduating from Memorial High School and the University of Evansville. She met Jerry as a young girl, and they wed in 1961. After living and working in Evansville and Bloomington, Indiana, Jerry was transferred to Akron, Ohio with Sears Roebuck. Betty was a teacher for over fifty years - spending forty two of those years at St. Augustine’s Catholic School in Barberton, Ohio teaching seventh and eighth grade English. Beyond teaching, she loved attending the Kentucky Derby with Jerry and lifelong friends for over fifty years, loved to read, especially catching up on bestsellers during her summers, enjoyed Broadway shows and seeing movies, played a mean game of bridge, and, most of all, spending time with her family.
Her intelligence, thoughtfulness, sincere caring, and sly sense of humor will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Betty is survived by her husband, Jerald Schaffstein; daughters, Diane and Lee Ann Snyder (Joseph); brother, Robert Berry (Susan); nieces and nephews; and past 7th and 8th graders who speak proper English.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. Augustine Church, 204 6th St NW, Barberton, OH 44203 with Fr. David Majikas as celebrant. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Akron, Ohio. Family will receive friends Friday from 4-7 PM at Cox-McNulty Funeral Home, 222 Norton Ave, Barberton.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations to the St. Augustine’s Catholic School Fund.
