Ellsworth “Bud” Newcomer, born July 31, 1946, was called home to be with the Lord on November 24, 2024. He is survived by and was a loving husband to Dolores; supportive father to Scott (Melissa); and proud grandpa to: Jacob, Gabriel, and Natalie. He is also survived by sister Nancy; and brother, David; and preceded in death by parents, John and Loretta; brothers: John Jr. (“Sonny”), James, and Robert; and sister, Carolyn.
Bud served in the US Marine Corps from 1966-1971, during which time he was deployed to Vietnam as Helicopter Air Crew, and from which he was honorably discharged at the rank of E5 Sergeant. He later served in the Ohio National Guard. Bud always looked back nostalgically and proudly on his military days and enjoyed striking up conversations and reminiscing with other veterans wherever he went. Wearing one of his military ball caps, shirts, or pins was effective in getting the conversational ball rolling. He remained connected to the Marine Corps through his membership in Pop-A-Smoke and attended several Marine Corps reunions.
After returning to civilian life, Bud gained employment at Morgan Adhesives Company (Mactac) as a slitter operator where he remained for over thirty years. He also owned the Command Post Hobby Shop for several years, overlapping his early career at Mactac.
Always young at heart, Bud enjoyed a variety of hobbies over the years, including model railroading; fine-scale modeling; showing his prize-winning Fiero GT at Cruise-ins and car shows; and participating as an active member at Maranatha Bible Church, where he served as a greeter, attended the SALT Adult Bible Fellowship, and co-founded the Kingdom Builders Modeling Club. He was also an avid reader of history.
Bud will be remembered by his family as a man of deep faith, tremendous inner and outer strength, and unwavering patriotism. Even when many others would have given up or lashed out under the same circumstances, Bud maintained his positivity until the very end, determined not to let his symptoms get the best of him. From the closing of an earthly life well lived emerges the joy of knowing he is now wrapped in the unparallelled glory and steadfast love of our God in Heaven.
Services will be held at Maranatha Bible Church, 1424 Killian Road, Akron on Monday, December 2, as follows: visitation at 10 AM, funeral service at 11 AM, and luncheon at 12 PM. Burial services to follow on Tuesday, December 3, 12 PM at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Road, Seville.
