Obituary

Gunder Paul Gundersen, 94, passed away peacefully May 3, 2023. Gunder was born June 5, 1928 in Bayonne, NJ to Carl August Gundersen and Rose Marie (SiSi) Vallentsits. In 1946 he graduated from Wadsworth High School then attended Miami University where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity and met the love of his life, Nancy Ellen Kiehl. Gunder transferred to The University of Akron in 1949 and graduated in 1951 with a BS in Business Administration. Gunder and Nancy married August 3, 1951. Immediately thereafter, he was drafted into the US Army, attended training with the 443rd quartermaster unit, served in Korea, and was honorably discharged in August 1953.

Gunder enjoyed his many years as a buyer of china, glass, and silverware for the M. O’Neil Company, then as a Regional Manager with Riley Industries. He spent 20 years as a Board Member of GenFed Credit Union where he thoroughly enjoyed the business camaraderie. Retirement was filled with family and friends, travel, and gardening. Treasured times included walks with his beloved Miniature Schnauzer, Liebschen, and car rides for ice cream. He loved the Wadsworth Grizzlies and attended many sporting events, both boys and girls, and enjoyed following their success. Gunder was active with the Wadsworth Class of 1946 alumni reunions having chaired events for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and many Aunts and Uncles throughout Europe.

Gunder is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Nancy, and their 3 children, Eric (Susan) Gundersen, Carl Gundersen, Lisa (Geoffrey) Jones of Amherst, NH ; Brother-in-law, Dr. Royal P. Kiehl (Dr. Phyllis S. Kiehl) of Anchorage, AK ; Sister-in-law, Betty (Robert) Kiehl of Fort Myers, FL ; Sister-in-law, Sandra Kiehl of Dayton, OH ; many nieces and nephews ; and cherished family friend Grete Pettersen of Tvedestrand, Norway.

Special thanks to the entire staff at The Inn at CoalRidge and Harmony Hospice for their compassionate care.

Military interment will take place Thursday, May 18th, at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rawiga Road, Rittman, OH at 2:15 pm.
