Obituary

Jack M. Wood, age 93, passed peacefully in his home on April 25, 2022.  He was predeceased by his mother, B. Estelle (Hooten) (Wood) Oliver; adopted father, Earl Wood; step-father, Bill Oliver; and step brother, Tom Wood.  Born in Alabama, he came to Barberton as a child and lived a full, productive, and happy life as a true Barbertonian.  Following graduation from BHS in 1946 and his service in the Army as a member of the Japan occupation force following WWII, he served as a Barberton policeman, Barberton Safety Director, Barberton Service Director, long-time executive with the Bernard Construction Company, director of the Barberton AAA, and developer of Austin Village in Barberton.  He was very active in many civic organizations, including Rotary, Kiwanis, Chamber of Commerce, school levies, and the Barberton YMCA fund drives.

Jack leaves his high school sweetheart and wife of over 72 years, Mary Lou (Hammer); and his children, Marilyn (John) Quillin, Don (Rhonda) Wood, Marci Hopper, Dave (Marcie) Wood, and Rich Wood; plus 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Jack was devoted to his family and all those around him.  He will be remembered and missed by his family and the countless friends that he cherished.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home, but Cox-McNulty Funeral Home will host viewing at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 4019 Manchester Road, Akron from 10:30 to 11:30 AM on Saturday April 30; followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30.  The family wishes to thank Traditions Hospice for their care these last few months; and suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Traditions Hospice.
