It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Larry Thomas. At the age of 85, Larry, a long-time resident of Portage Lakes, left this world on July 5, 2024, after bravely facing a short but difficult battle with cancer.
Larry was born on August 27, 1938, in Akron, Ohio, to Olif and Mellie (Cox) Thomas. He was preceded in death by his brother, Layton Thomas, and his sister, Judy Ross. He is survived by his brother, Lonnie (Sharon) Thomas.
Larry graduated from Hower High School in 1956 and joined Goodyear's tire mold design program. After forty years with Goodyear, he retired as Chief Engineer.
In 1959, Larry married his first wife, Janice (Ragon), and their love blossomed into a beautiful family. They were blessed with two children, Lyndon (Barb) Thomas and Lori (Joe) Hall, who brought immeasurable joy into their lives. His children gave him three grandchildren: Rick (Sarah) Thomas, Victoria (Kyler) Posey, and Grace Hall. He was also blessed recently with his first great-grandchild, Nora Posey.
In 2018, after 59 years of marriage, Janice preceded him in death. In 2020, he married his second wife, Ruth Nielson. Larry and Ruth enjoyed splitting their time between the Lakes and Alamo, Texas.
Larry's unwavering devotion to his faith led him to be an active and cherished member of the Apostolic Church of Barberton for over five decades. He found immense joy in Southern gospel music and wholeheartedly championed the mission of Answers in Genesis and the awe-inspiring Ark Encounter.
Larry was a man who lived life to the fullest. His love for physical activity knew no bounds. Whether it was water-skiing on a sunny day, hitting the slopes for some snow skiing in the winter, going on leisurely cruises, or exploring new places with his family, Larry was always on the move. What's more, at the age of 80, he fearlessly went skydiving, proving that age never hindered his adventurous spirit.
Beyond his active lifestyle, Larry's sharp intellect was equally impressive. He dedicated time to keeping his mind engaged by tackling challenging puzzles, solving Sudoku grids, and delving into crossword puzzles. His thirst for knowledge and mental stimulation was evident in everything he did.
His favorite pastime was riding in his little red convertible, taking his family to Pavs for his favorite ice cream, chocolate almond.
Services will be held at the Apostolic Church of Barberton on July 14, 2024. Calling hours will begin at 2:30 pm, and the service will follow at 4:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks for donations to Answers in Genesis, an organization that Larry deeply cared about. You can send your contributions to PO Box 510, Hebron, KY, 41048.
