Mary Mitchell

On March 15th at 91 years of age, Mary Mitchell peacefully left us here on earth to join her beloved husband, George, in heaven. The daughter of Nick and Katherine Goumas, she was proceeded in death by her siblings, James, Frank, Spiro and Andrew Goumas and Calypso Duncan. She is survived by her two daughters, Lisa Mitchell and Kathy VanHammen and son-in-law, Tom VanHammen as well as her sister, Caliope Kody and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Mary was a greatly loved mother, wife and family member who cultivated love and care for her whole community. She was a lifetime member of the Akron First Assembly of God Church where she taught Sunday school and participated in much of church community life.

During her lifetime, Mary was deeply committed to everything that she put her heart and hand to. She earned a masters degree Akron University all the while tending to her family including her brother, Frank, and father-in-law, Abura Mitchell. She served as a therapist at Emerge Ministries for almost 30 years. Outside of her professional life, she was an empathic ear and true friend to many people.

Mary and George enjoyed many wonderful travels together and they both enjoyed reading, playing games and spending time with friends and family. Mary was an excellent cook and always provided delicious food the share with and nourish others.

Mary blessed so many people with her presence and love and will be greatly missed.

Funeral service will be held at Akron First Assembly of God 1175 W Market St. on Tuesday, March 26 at 2:00 PM. Visitation will follow at the conclusion of the service.
A private burial service will be held at a later time.
