Mary Lou Powell, age 87, of Wadsworth, Ohio, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born on February 9, 1937, in Lockney, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Beulah Carpenter.
Mary Lou was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose love and kindness touched all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Rev. John Powell; her parents; and her siblings: Ann Stalnaker, June Westfall, Helen Harris, Douglas Carpenter, and Gary Carpenter. She was also preceded in death by her cherished grandson, Drew Newton.
She is survived by her children: Ed Powell, Rita Newton (husband, Jim), and John Powell Jr. (wife, Carla). She also leaves behind eight grandchildren: Ed Powell (wife, Zoanne), Sara Smith (husband, Dan), Danny Newton (wife, Jen), Amber Young (husband, Ryan), Caroline Allex (husband, Shawn), Caitlin Grady (husband, Eric), and Cara Smith (husband, Brett); as well as seven great-grandchildren: Madeline, Aiden, Brinley, Teagan, Brennan, Rory, and Halle.
For over 30 years, Mary Lou was a pastor’s wife at the Reimer Road Baptist Church in Wadsworth. She thoroughly enjoyed singing in the church choir and cantatas. Strong in her faith, she reflected the light of Christ in her community.
Mary Lou's warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love for her family will be deeply missed but forever cherished. Her legacy of kindness and strength will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
A service to honor her life will be held on February 8, 2025, at Crossroads Community Church in Wadsworth, Ohio. Calling hours will begin at 9:30 a.m. followed by a service at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome to stay after the service and join the family for a meal.
