A loving soul left this earth on August 27, 2024, after being here for 93 years. God decided it was time for Myrtle to be with Him in the Heavenly mansion he prepared for her. Meeting her at the gate was Frank Whitney, Lamar Smith and a multitude of family members and friends who had preceded her. Myrtle is now frolicking in Heaven in her new, perfect body and singing praises to her Savior while the rest of us are left behind to mourn her passing and know that we are better for having known her.
Myrtle was born at home in the Appalachian foothills near Nelsonville, Ohio to Clyde and Bertha Hashman. She grew up in the area known as Pittsburg Hollow until as a high school student she was swept off her feet and fell in love with a dashing young man named Frank Whitney from Barberton, Ohio. They soon married, moved to Barberton, and started a family. Their six children are Pamela (Tim) Bard, Dianna (Bob) Wilkinson, Debra (Mike) Lilly, Frank Whitney, Penny (Rick) Ashbrook, and Dennis Whitney (Cheryl Wheadon).
Frank Whitney made a widow of Myrtle, and she then later married a widower named Lamar Smith. They did not have children together but shared a life together for many happy years. Lamar passed several years ago, making Myrtle a widow for the second time.
Myrtle was preceded in death by all her siblings and by grandsons: Joey Francis and Mike Lilly. She leaves behind many children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She also leaves behind her church family at Bible Holiness Church.
Any donations may be made in her memory to Bible Holiness Church at 375 37th Street SW, Barberton, Ohio 44203.
Calling Hours will be held September 3, 2024, from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. immediately followed by the Funeral Service at Cox-McNulty Funeral Home, 222 Norton Avenue, Barberton, Ohio 44203.
