Shirley Browning May Obituary

Shirley Browning May, age 88, went home to be with our Lord and Savior on August 12, 2025.

Shirley was born on November 11, 1936 to Thomas and Bertha Tyree in Clendenin, WV. She graduated in June 1956 from Clendenin High School and then married Cebert Browning in September 1956.

Shirley and Cebert traveled the world together for 22 years. Cebert was an active serviceman in the United States Army and was stationed in Europe, Hawaii and multiple Army bases in the continental United States during his military career.  During their travels they helped establish five Church of God Churches in the different military towns.  They then retired to Elizabethtown, KY where they lived until Cebert passed away in 1994.  They were married 38 years at the time of his passing. Shirley moved to Green, OH in 1996, to be with her only daughter, Deborah (Browning) Pompeo.

Prior to moving to Green, OH, Shirley had started her credentialing to be an ordained Church of God minister through the State board of Kentucky.  She completed the credentialing process through the Ohio Church of God ministries.  She and her daughter Deb did evangelistic work for several years in northeast Ohio & Kentucky, with Shirley ministering and Deb singing and leading in worship as a music minister.  At that time they began attending the Greensburg Church of God with Pastor Winston Pike as the senior pastor.  Shirley, Deb & Winston Pike later became the Winston Pike Trio / Greensburg Trio, ministering & guest singing at camp meetings, many churches & revivals spanning Ohio & Kentucky.

In February 2004 Shirley married James “Jim” May after meeting at the Greensburg Church of God. Then in 2006 they started attending the Barberton Church of God, where she attended until she was moved to assisted living / dementia facility and later passed due to complications of her illness.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Bertha Tyree; husband Cebert Browning; husband James May; sons, Daniel Browning and David Browning; and siblings, Arthur Tyree, Junior Tyree, Virginia Braley, John Tyree, Thelma Frame, and Anna Barnhouse.

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Deb (Michael) Pompeo; grandchildren, Jesse (Carmen) Browning, Lauren (Alberto) Flores, Tara Browning, and Kristy Pompeo; great-grandchildren, Daniel and Gabriel Browning, Alexander and Beatrix Flores; and best friend, Sandy Smith.
