Terri Hughes Obituary

Terri Lynn Hughes of Barberton went home to be with her Lord August 8, 2021, at home surrounded by loved ones. She was 66 years old.

Terri was born August 15, 1954 at Aultman Hospital. She was raised in Tallmadge, Ohio by Helen and Gene Ratliff, and graduated with honors from Tallmadge High School in 1973. She married Robert (“Bob”) Hughes in 1981. Together in Barberton, they  raised their 6 children. We are thankful our mom didn’t hesitate to become “mom” in 1981 to the 4 of us who truly needed her at the time she and our dad got married. We are beyond thankful to her for being the mom that she “didn’t have to be” without any hesitation.

Terri spent her working career serving others. She had an in-home daycare for nearly a decade, where she cared  for dozens of children around the clock, loving them as her own and involving them in all family activities. Many family pictures even include these “bonus” children!  She then worked in the healthcare industry for more than 20 years caring for the elderly. She made an effort each day to talk with those she cared for, bringing in things they needed, especially at Christmas. Gift giving was one of her favorite ways to show she cared. She treated everyone she met with the utmost respect and kindness and was always willing to help in any way she could. She always put others before herself.

Terri loved reading and spending time outdoors, fishing or gardening. She loved planting a variety of flowers, grasses and bushes, especially roses. She was constantly maintaining the stone walls in the yard, building her stone patio, pulling weeds, transplanting flowers, and discovering hidden treasures in the yard, such as the perfectly preserved front steps hidden under the front yard. When she wasn’t working in their yard planting and tending to her many gardens, she was helping her parents and children with theirs. When she couldn’t be outdoors, she was tackling another in-home project. She almost single-handedly restored their century home to its original wood finish, stripping paint and staining the woodwork on all doors, doorways, windows, staircases, and cupboards. She laid carpet and flooring, and stripped and applied paint and wallpaper more times than we could ever keep track!

Terri is preceded in death by her grandmother, Una Ratliff. She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 40 years, Robert Hughes; sons, James (Tina) Hughes, Ricky Lambes, Michael (Candace) Hughes; daughters, Heather (Jack) Hughes, Tina (Jake) Pastorius, Kim (Dana) Stanger; ten grandchildren, James, Alexis, Dominic, Adam, Marc, Jacob, Kaitlyn, Cameron, Alexandria, Zane; and three great-grandchildren, Mikey, Jackson, and Luke. She also leaves behind her loving parents, Gene and Helen Ratliff; twin sister, Debi Ann; sisters, Linda, Debby, Becky, Keeley, and brothers, Todd, Ted, Justin, Tim, and Johnny.

Calling hours will be held from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm on Friday, August 13, 2021 at Cox- McNulty Funeral Home, 222 Norton Ave, Barberton, Ohio. The funeral will immediately follow, with Pastor Alex Barnes officiating. There will be a family burial at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery at 2:00 pm.

We are especially grateful to our dad, Bob, for the loving and gentle care given during mom’s illness and their beloved dog Buddy for being a constant companion to them both. The family would also like to thank Summa Hospice for the excellent care they provided.
